Queensland's Cooperating with India for Commonwealth Games

Keeping in view the Commonwealth Games, India entered into a tie-up with the Queensland state government in Australia to strengthen business links.

Leading Queensland sports infrastructure companies, will participate in the infrastructure building teams for the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games These are the same companies which owns the credit of building Olympic Park during Sydney Olympics.

This is not the first time when Australia is coordinating with India in business ,Queensland has been in business ties with India for a long time , but the only concern was natural resources. Recently a seminar “Queensland-India Partnership: Sports Infrastructure and Commonwealth Games 2010” was organized ,where the Queensland Premier, has expressed their interests in showing their expertise in other fields as well including Commonwealth Games. Besides working in event management and infrastructure building ,the Queensland government would be helping to train athletes for the commonwealth games

One Step Ahead

Extending their cooperation and relationship the Commonwealth committee has issued a Letter of Intent for construction of the new tensile membrane roof for the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Taiyo Membrane Corporation.

Eviction of Elephants from Delhi ahead of India's Commonwealth Games

Dozens of elephants in India's capital need a new home after being evicted from a riverside locale to make way for construction linked to the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The New Delhi government is racing against time to spruce up the sprawling city of 14 million in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which it views as a showcase event for the country's capital.

Improvements underway include extending a metro-rail service, and building new bus shelters and special traffic lanes. Homeowners are also being encouraged to offer bed-and-breakfast lodgings to overcome a shortage of hotel rooms.

The city also has plans to evict poor slum dwellers, including a group that looks after elephants used at weddings and festivals along the Yamuna river, to build apartments for athletes and officials.

The demolition drive has displaced the elephants and their owners, who have been living there for years after being brought here from nearby states.

An appeal put out by Wildlife SOS for donations to resettle the elephants has met with some success, with one donor pledging 500,000 rupees (12,500 dollars).

Low-floor buses to Operate between Delhi and Noida by 2010 Games

According to Noida Authority officials, around 40 low-floor buses will ply on Noida-Delhi routes before the Commonwealth Games 2010.Of these, 20 will ply from the Delhi Transport Corporation’s Noida depot along with another 20 buses of the Noida Authority.

The DTC is expected to sanction the buses for the Noida depot in Sector-32 soon. Semi-low floor buses will also be sanctioned for the suburb once the process of modernization is completed.

The Commonwealth Games is expected to attract a lot of visitors to Noida and Greater Noida, which will also host some of the events, apart from visitors.

The Authority plans to have many world-class hotels in place before the Games. The DTC, officials said, has that in mind, and plans to introduce many new standard buses on the city’s roads soon.

Meanwhile, sources in the Noida Authority said the officials are mooting a proposal to buy similar buses which will run on city routes. The proposals are expected to come up in a few months and the plan, if approved, will be implemented before the Commonwealth Games.

There are close to 200 buses running between Noida and Delhi on 15 routes, and 94 buses on various other routes from Delhi Transport Corporation’s Noida depot , which has 115 buses in all.

Agra Development Authority announced schemes for city's modernization

The Agra Development Authority has announced half a dozen schemes to modernize the city's civic infrastructure.

Another bridge on river Yamuna close to the existing Jawahar bridge should be ready by mid June, 2010. This will relieve the pressure on the tottering 100-year-old Strachey bridge which itself is to go through a make-over phase. Work on at least three new fly overs in the city will begin next month and they are to be completed by 2010.

The biggest problem is water supply, which is brackish in the Taj Mahal area,which was made by the British .The water supply to the Taj Mahal area and the gardens is through a minor canal branching from the Agra canal fed by the Okhla barrage. This minor canal is now choked with garbage and there's no water because of poor maintenance . These are the major problems which demand fast and efficient overhauling.

Work on a bridge for the pipeline which has to cross the river Yamuna, close to the Mathura district border, has begun after some initial hassles caused by rival groups of villagers who wanted the project shifted to their side of the village.

Commonwealth Games a Catalyst to Agra's growth

As 2010 Commonwealth Games is organized in Delhi ,it is proving to be a boon to the suburbs of Delhi and neighboring areas along with other most common tourist destinations in the country. Keeping in mind the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010 ,the Agra-Mathura region is witnessing a slew of developmental projects aimed at upgrading the civic infrastructure. Billions released for training athletes for Commonwealth Games

The Sports Ministry of the union government has provided a massive fund of Rs. 802 crores ( Rs.8.02 billion) to train India's elite sports persons for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. The fund, would facilitate state-of-art training, foreign exposure, scientific backup and equipment to athletes.

The selection process under the scheme is done by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in consultation with the national sports federations of the concerned discipline before preparing the list of core probables with a profile of each sports person. The list will go to the government-constituted 'monitoring committee' and 'steering committee' before it is finalized

These core probables will undergo state of art training and exposure at various competition venues and closer to the Games, based on their performance, the teams which will represent India at the Commonwealth Games will be selected from out of these core probables.

Creating New Accommodation Facilities in Jaipur for Commonwealth Games tourists

According the data and record of the Tourism Ministry ,at the moment there are about 3,000 rooms available for tourists in Jaipur. Also, the state would have another 12 five-star hotels in major cities by 2010.

Keeping in mind a shortage of 2,000 rooms in Jaipur itself during the Delhi Commonwealth Games , the government is planning to give incentives to private players, including those owning ancestral properties, to construct hotels.

Under its public-private partnership, the government has invited investors to work in different fields, including tourism. Thirty MoUs were signed in November to build entertainment parks, spas and wellness centres and resorts

Rajasthan Preparing it Big

Giving importance to the tourism sector, the tourism budget was increased from Rs.13 crores in 2004 to Rs.66 crores this year.

The Tourism Ministry and the state government is focusing their attention on the growth of tourism. The main focus is on creating more attraction and more variety so that the number of returning visitors could be increased.
