Games Village-Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games

Commonwealth games village interior picAs the time of Commonwealth games is coming closer and closer, Government of Delhi is speeding up its work to develop sports venues and infrastructure work to keep itself prepared well in advance before this mega event. India has already hosted Asian Games two times earlier, but the country has never hosted the Commonwealth Games. The organizing committee along with Government of Delhi is striving hard to make the capital city of India into a well-organized and fully equipped city for the upcoming games.

It is certain that 2010 Commonwealth Games will attract large number of athletes and officials. To accommodate these guests during the Games, establishment of New Delhi Games village is in process. The site is located perfectly in the centre of the city near the major landmarks of the city including Humayun Tomb, Bahai Temple and Akshardham. The village is located on the banks of holy River Yamuna and the dense green cover in the surroundings will provide a soothing and pleasing environment for the athletes.

The village is constructed over an area of 63.5 hectares under the guidance of Delhi Development Authority (DDA). It is estimated that the place can easily accommodate 8500 athletes and their supporting staff. The construction work is likely to be completed by December 2009 as per the official projections.

The cost involved in the construction is solely the responsibility of Government of India. Games village will be full equipped with all modular facilities so that the Athletes and their supporting staff can get ultimate comfort and remember the games as well as the facilities for a long-long time.

Keeping an Eye on Games, Public Transport Gets High Boost

With 2010 Commonwealth Games a little more than a year away, improving transportation facilities continued to be high on the government’s agenda. Monday’s budget was indicative of it with a whopping 31% of the total outlay, Rs 3,069 crore, allocated to this sector. Though no new projects were announced, the money was to be used to fund ongoing schemes like construction of Delhi Metro, procurement of 2,500 new DTC buses and building new flyovers, underpasses and rail over-bridges.

In a scenario where the number of vehicles in Delhi was set to cross the 60 lakh mark, the move to encourage public transport would go a long way in easing congestion.

The government announced that work on nine new Delhi Metro corridors was progressing on schedule. All the new lines, which will add another 185 km to the existing network, would be operational by October 2010.

Funds have also been allocated for 2,500 new DTC buses that will hit the roads before March next year. The purchase order for these buses has already been placed. The Union government agreed to partially fund 1,500 more buses for Delhi under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM)

In addition to buses, funds have also been set aside for new road infrastructure projects like flyovers, underpasses, rail overbridges and road resurfacing. The construction of flyovers/ROBs is gaining pace at RR Kohli Marg, Shastri Nagar Pushta, Azadpur, BJ Marg-RTR Marg, Africa Avenue, Nelson Mandela Marg, Naraina and underpasses at ITO Chungi. Work on Barapullah Nallah Road and Salimgarh Bypass projects have also started.

Further, an amount of Rs 111.61 crore has been released to MCD for construction of 17 ROBs to be completed before October 2010. Another Rs 80 crore has been released to MCD to develop a modern parking for the new DTC buses.

A Reality Check of Commonwealth Games 2010 venues

The Beijing Olympics is over and the action moves to London for the 2012 Olympic games. But before that, New Delhi is to host the Commonwealth Games in 2010. While Beijing Olympics showcased years of preparations which translated into an impressive visual treat and jaw-dropping examples of cutting-edge infrastructure, the level of the Capital’s preparedness on the other hand for an event that is barely two years away is worrying to say the least. Here is a reality check on the competition and training venues for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the city which will see as many as 8,000 athletes participating.

The Following Agencies are engaged in the different activities of renovation, constructions and new developments:

  • Central Public Works Department(CPWD)
  • Public Works Department (PWD)
  • New Delhi Municipal Corporation(NDMC)
  • Delhi Development Authority (DDA)

Along with other small contractors and developers , appointed by these agencies
I will post the progress of these agencies , one by one in my coming posts
