Delhi Mayor Wants City Clean before Games

Delhi mayor Kanwar Sain directed civic officials on Friday to prepare a master plan for making the city garbage-free before the Commonwealth Games later this year and requested the Delhi government to clear an anti-littering law pending with it.

Sain said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) should adopt a double-prong strategy to deal with the situation make the public aware about the need to keep Delhi clean and take deterrent action to prevent littering and creation of unsanitary conditions. He directed the municipal commissioner to prepare a master plan to achieve the goals.

The MCD has already launched a sanitation awareness campaign, which will be intensified, he said.

The mayor said the MCD should also intensify prosecution action against littering and urged municipal magistrates to pay special attention in this regard.

Sain appealed to the Delhi government to clear Delhi Cleanliness and Sanitation Byelaws, 2009, pending with it for the past six months. He said the MCD had approved it in May 2009 and subsequently sent it for approval of and notification by the Delhi government.
