English and Etiquette training for porters started, will see them at railway stations soon

Do not get surprised the next time you are approached by an English-speaking porter at the railway stations as Railways have launched a unique programme to hone their English speaking capabilities ahead of the Commonwealth Games. Taking a cue from China which launched soft skill programmes for taxi cabs ahead of the Beijing Olympics, Railways rolled out the initiative covering 50 licensed porters from three major railway stations New Delhi, Delhi and Nizamuddin.

“They would also serve as a one stop-point both for foreign tourists and domestic travelers providing information about tourist interests, taxi fares and Games stadia among others,” DRM Delhi division Ashwini Lohani said. “Coolies are the first point of interaction for outsiders. We want every visitor gets back with a good friendly image of the city,” Lohani said.
