Keeping in mind the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi, UT administration, Confederation of Indian Industries (northern region), and people in the tourism industry here have set their eyes on encashing the tourism potential of the sports extravaganza.
The event is being seen as an opportunity to showcase and promote the existing tourism potential of the region. Speaking to The Times of India, a senior administration official disclosed that a broad outline had emerged after the recent visit of Union tourism minister Kumari Selja to the city, in which she talked about the need for extending tourism possibilities at the time of holding Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010.
The minister talked about additional need for at least 10,000 hotel rooms to cope up with the incoming volume of foreign visitors. She asked the hoteliers and resort-owners from the northern region to be prepared to pitch in to take part in the massive sports event.
According to senior official, they have also decided to include private hoteliers and the resort owners in this large tourism endeavor. ‘Through this event we could also showcase our existing tourism sites and gain further mileage in the tourism field. Deliberations have already been started with the ministry of tourism to chalk out further details in this matter,’ revealed the official.
According to one of the participating candidates, the move could definitely boost the tourism potential of the region and go a long way in bringing in fresh foreign tourists to this part of the northern region.
