Commandos from elite National Security Guards will provide security cover during the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi next year. According to sources, more than 100 NSG commandos will work in coordination with Special Forces and Delhi Police in their security arrangements for the Games venues and VIPs.
Confirming the development, special commissioner of police (security), S B Deol, said: ‘‘We are seeking NSG’s assistance for the security of the Games venue. But the talks are in initial stages. The arrangement will be finalized in consultation with the NSG and organizing committee.’’
Sources said the NSG commandos will soon begin an exercise at the Games venue to familiarize themselves with situation on the ground. ‘‘We will begin our mock drills once the details of the operation are finalized,’’ said an NSG officer. He, however, refused to tell more about the security arrangements that NSG commandos will make for the games.
‘‘There are still 14 months to go for the Commonwealth Games but we are leaving no stone unturned. Other than NSG, central paramilitary forces, commandos, quick reaction teams (QRTs) and air controllers for aerial surveillance will also be pressed into service,’’ said a senior police officer.
Sources said that apart from securing Games Village, NSG commandos may also provide security at hotels where sportsmen from the participating countries will stay.
‘‘These commandos are based in Manesar but during the Games they will stay at a central control room so that they could reach any place quickly if need arises,’’ added the officer.
‘‘The Commonwealth Games scheduled for October 2010 will last for several days and we need to ensure the movement and deployment of the NSG commandos over a period of time. They will work with other security agencies to provide cover to more than 5,000 athletes,’’ said a member of the organizing committee.
